New Design!

So, I've been studying HTML and CSS for the past 2 weeks or so.  I decided to implement the CSS I've learned here on my LJ (they wouldn't let me mess with the HTML...or I couldn't figure out how to.  Anybody know?)

So...I found a picture that I liked (the sunflowers) and used adobe's "kuler" application to match a color palette to it.  Then I used those colors and made my own stylesheet for my page.

I'm not done yet - there's a lot of tweaking I need to do (especially on the couple of parts that don't match yet!) but I'm tired and am going to call it a night.  I'm really proud of myself, though - I feel like I've really learned a lot in the past two weeks.

Hooray for brain power!

Hi, all!

So, it's been a while since I posted, thought I'd give a little update.  I got an awesome job teaching cooking classes to kids.  It's part time, but the hours should be increasing in March (right now it's 10-15/week).  I love it so much that I'd do it for free, so I feel like I made the right choice in taking my time and being picky about what type of job I took this time around.

D and I continue to look for a house.  We found two that we liked, one of which we like more, but unfortunately it got rented before we could get the rest of the girls together to see it.  But hopefully we'll find the perfect place - just like I found the perfect job - if we hang in there and refuse to settle for something we don't like.  I'm confident that we'll still be able to get everything together by March 1 for our move, which will be bittersweet.  I'll be thrilled to live with D, but sad to leave K and M.  I'll also be going from a house of 3 to a house of 5, which may be slightly stress-inducing.  But I can't wait to have all of my stuff set up in a house with my beloved, regardless of how many other people are there.

Other news?  I made homemade tortillas the other day.  They turned out awesomely.  I also introduced K and M to Encocado de Cameron last night, and M said it was some of the best shrimp he'd ever had.  Ecuadorian food triumphs again!  Seriously, though, I love it when people enjoy the food that I make for them.  The making it is a joy in itself, but it's like a double plus super bonus when loved ones enjoy it, too.

Also, I've been playing some video games lately.  I beat the entire game of SuperMario Brothers 3 (I'm very proud) and am currently playing Portal. Ok, that's a lie.  I finished Portal, except the end isn't the end, so I'm not actually done.  It's complicated.  All I have to say is..."THE CAKE IS A LIE!"

Peace out, girl scouts!

So it's been a while...

Hello, friends!

I just got "nudged" because I haven't posted in 6 weeks!  So here's an update on my life:  I moved!  That's right, I am no longer a Virginian. I am now happily located in Maryland.

Other news?  I don't really have much.  D and I continue house hunting, the holidays were fraught with drama as usual, I'm still looking for a job in a kitchen or bakery, and tomorrow starts the new year.  This year's resolution: Dance more!

Thoughts on Crayons

When working as a nanny, I spent a great deal of time around crayons. I have come to believe that crayons have human counterparts that they reflect. There are many different types of crayons, just as there are many different types of people. Here are just a few examples of some crayon stereotypes:

The Attention-Seeker: This crayon just screams 'pick me!' It tries to be the brightest color in the box, keeps its wrapper tidy and its tip sharp, and sometimes even throws glitter into its mix to be more desirable. This crayon wants to be wanted, wants to be chosen, and will do whatever it takes to get the affirmation that it needs.

The Rebel: This crayon, while having the same goal as the attention seeker, goes about it differently. It will try to be the dullest, dirtiest crayon in the box in order to get someone to notice. It will dull down its color, sometimes even to black or grey, and will let its wrapper get ripped and torn as its point becomes duller and duller. I even saw one crayon try to don a single silver hoop earring, but honestly, that's taking things a bit too far.

The Conformist: This is the crayon that people think of when they say, “crayon”. It isn't bright and shiny all the time, but it isn't dull and sullen either. It does it's best to blend in with the rest of the crayons and only calls attention to itself when its color is needed. It is a background crayon, and usually content to be so…it probably says “Crayola” on its wrapper.

The Nudist: Watch out for this daring crayon! It decides to be naked for a variety of reasons, among them: "Wrappers are so constraining" and "I can connect better with the drawing this way." Other crayons are usually shocked and try to avoid this rule-breaker, and so nudist crayons generally migrate to a basket in a preschool classroom, where they are accepted in all their wrapper-less-ness.

The individual: On occasion, you may meet a crayon that is drawing to the beat of its own drum. This crayon usually has some strange color, like Puce or Garnet, or something attempting artistry, like “Whisper of Perfect Pink.” These crayons, though strange, are harmless, and, having their own different sort of style, can be a wonderful addition to your crayon box, should you ever happen to come across one.

The artist: The true artist crayon is rare, and if you ever see one, you will know it instantly. The moment you look upon an artist crayon, your mind will be full of pictures of all the things you could draw with this crayon. These are the crayon’s designs, and the artist crayon longs to have them realized, so if you have time and a little talent, please oblige by picking up the crayon and drawing one of the pictures that it projected out to you. It will make the crayon's day.

From K and M

If you saw ME in a police car, what would you think I got arrested for? Answer me, then if you want, post to your own journal and see how many crimes you get accused of.

Hooray Obama and MEH for aunts

So I had all of these plans to go see my friends in MD tonight...hang out with my favorite D/s couple at their house, along with my Beloved (and her girlfriend, too, I think.) However it was election night, which means my aunt J went all nuts on me about how I was supposed to watch the results with her.

I love politics. I love them a lot. And I love my aunt. So I canceled my plans and stayed home. And her thanks? She falls asleep before the polls are all closed. Yup. I watched Obama take Ohio to the accompaniment of my aunts' snores. So I went next door and watched with the neighbors, who were appropriately awake and celebratory. Then, when I came home, my aunt J had the nerve to bitch about how I hadn't done enough housework today. Right...like I didn't spend half the day taking care of both my aunts who were all jet lagged and not feeling well, and the other half running important errands, like grocery shopping and going to the bank and...oh: VOTING.

The moral of the story? Next time J wants to hang out and I already have plans, I won't cancel them for her.

It's hard to ignore the fact that today is Election Day in the U.S. If you went to the polls today, tell us what it was like. Long line? Free stickers? Hanging chads? We want the details.

I went to the polls expecting an long wait, but was shocked to find no line at all! I was in and out in under 10 minutes, proudly displaying my "I voted" sticker. It's my first time voting, and I'm so proud and excited!

Some silly rhyming early morning thoughts as I get ready to leave for New Jersey:

I'm off to New Jersey to go on retreat
With my family, friends, and girlfriend (she's sweet)
We'll dance and we'll laugh and we'll scream and we'll cry
We'll relearn the power that's held in a sigh

A house on a river, a hot tub's there, too
Plenty of love and plenty to do
The family's growing, all side by each
So much to learn, and so much to teach

I'm off to New Jersey to spend a few days
Mask-less, accepted, and free from the haze
of everyday living, the wear and the tear...
I just can't wait until we get there!

Love, Poetry, and Compersion

Woke up in D's bed again...I'm totally spoiled for sleeping alone now; I have to have someone/something to cuddle with, even if it's just a pillow.  I've gotten used to the snuggle-sleeping, and I'm fully ok with that.  D took E home now, so I'm having some much-needed alone time.  Sometimes I forget how much I need to be alone sometimes, and then I get all restless and can't figure out why, but thankfully I was able to both remember and articulate this need today, so here I am alone.  I took advantage of the time to do some journaling.  I wrote a poem:

Also, wrote down some thoughts on compersion:

the joy I find in watching my lovers loving each other.  E's happy noises as D fills her; D's tender-loving smile as she watches E going down on her...I feel not an ounce of jealousy, I am wholly content to watch their happiness, finding my pleasure in theirs.  I am reminded of Rilke's poem about the lovers on the carpet:

Rilke's Poem )

Watching my lovers make love is unsayably beautiful.  This perfect happiness frightens me...can it be real?  Can it last?  And what will happen when it ends?  WIll I come crashing down?  Or will I settle contentedly into a new life; a level of contentment that my life thus far has lacked?  For now, it is enough that I am loved, safe, and accepted.

Deviled Eggs

I had the marvelous opportunity of attending a knitting-and-porn-potluck come-together last night.  It was hosted by a dear friend, and I got to bring my Dominant along, which was a blast.  The food was fairly good - although somewhat repetitive, consisting mostly of bread-type things with cheeses and sauce: Lasagna, Pizza, etc.  The porn was excellent: Chemistry 1, which I highly recommend, and Bride of Sin, which I only saw part of, but am a huge fan.  It was all full of religion and bondage...mixed.  Hooray.  During the party, a point was brought up about the "ineffectual mid-fuck ass slap" that is regularly featured in het porn.  Some of my favorite lines ever:

"If spanking is the chili powder of sex, than the mid-fuck ass slap is like...paprika."
"Yes.  And both are good with deviled eggs."

Keep laughing, ya'll - life is too short.

I also have to say - sex that is sex and sex that is making love?  Cake made with all-purpose flour versus cake made with cake flour.  And sex that incorporates any form of BDSM? Chocolate with chili powder.  Hey - don't knock it 'till you've tried it.

So, my Dominant introduced me to this awesome comic, and this one made me laugh out loud; had to re-post it.  To understand what's funny, you have to know that both the teenagers pictured are pre-op trans.

It feels like fall today, for the first time this year.  I woke up and it was all grey and windy outside...it feels like a beef stew and biscuts sort of day.  My dominant came over yesterday and fixed my wireless internet, so no I can be online in my room again, which is nice.  So I'm having a lazy fall day...in fact, I'm still in bed.  But I'm contemplating getting up soon to make some food.  Stew would be good, or some sort of cream based soup, like locro, except that I'm out of potatoes and I don't have any avocado.

There's something amazing about the changing of seasons.  Honestly, I love summer, and I'm sad to see it go.  But I feel like the changing of the seasons is paralleling the changing of my life this year.  Like, fall is beginning, and so are new ventures for me - heading back to school, for one.  It's kind of a thrill to watch the weather turn as everything shifts.

It's supposed to rain later today, and I'm looking forward to sitting inside with a cup of hot chocolate, watching the season premier of Grey's Anatomy and listening to the rain.  There's nothing like stormy weather to make inside seem cozy and delightful.  Hooray.

Live Journal Debut!

I have decided to bite the bullet and join live journal.  My main reasoning for this is that I'm tired of carrying around my laptop so that I can type up my thoughts at any given moment, and so am working to make all of my documents available online.  One is my novel, which I have moved to an online writing site, and one is my journal, which I'm going to try to keep up with here.  It should also be handy as a way to keep in touch with people.  I was using myspace for this, but the majority of the people I know are now on LJ and not so much on myspace.  SO...

I will be writing about life, sharing stories and quotes, and probably lots and lots and lots of food stuff.  Mmmm...cooking.  I am currently roasting a turkey that has been marinading in white wine, garlic, and basil, and my entire house smells delicious.  It's quite exciting.

Anyhow, bear with me as I figure this whole Live Journal thing out...hopefully I'll get the hang of it before too long.
